NameHippisley, RayOccupationBuilder, Mayor.BiographyRay Hippisley was born at Bondi in 1925 to Charles and Bessie Hippisley and spent his early years living at Rose Bay. In 1943, when he was 17 years old, he postponed his building studies to join the naval service on the HMAS Gascoyne on which he served until 1945. HMAS Gascoyne’s company was awarded the Philippine Star for its service. Ray’s older brother David was lost in action during service on the HMAS Armidale in 1942.
Following the war, Ray resumed his studies and joined his father’s construction business. In 1953, the family moved to Oak Flats where they continued the business. Ray built many homes in the Shellharbour area, particularly at Albion Park and Oak Flats.
During his time with local government, Ray saw the construction of Shellharbour Hall, Shellharbour Library and the Albion Park Baby Health Centre. During his time as mayor, the Mount Warrigal subdivision commenced, and he was heavily involved with Council’s Home Nursing Service which started in 1960.
Ray Hippisley served as alderman for Shellharbour Municipal Council for 18 years and as mayor for seven years.
