Shellharbour Council implemented a major upgrade to the Shellharbour Pool and foreshore reserve area in 1993. Features included the installation of a new water circulation system for the pool, stainless steel fencing, replacement of the shower and toilet blocks, landscape works, new lighting and additional carparking. The work was completed in 1994.
Shellharbour resident, Beverley Whitfield, born in 1954, was an Australian Olympic swimmer and record holder. She won a gold and bronze medal representing Australia in the beaststroke events at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. She also won three gold medals in the 1970 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games and two silver medals in the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games.
The pool at Shellharbour was named the Beverley Whitfield Pool in her honour in 1994.
