Stones were selected for their ability to create tools. Stones were struck by a secondary piece (hammerstone) causing smaller pieces to chip off the stone. The smaller pieces were worked into a variety of flaked stone tools. The remaining centrepiece of the original stone, selected for tool making, is the 'core'.

These cores show many percussion (fracture) marks where flakes have been removed for use.
