In 1903, he married Ada Gordon and started farming at Jerrara. About this time, he joined the Illawarra Lancers, which became part of the Illawarra Light Horse at the start of World War 1. Theo did not serve overseas; he stayed in Australia, trained Officers, and was part of the unit in charge of guarding Cronulla. He retired from the Light Horse in 1932 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Theo and Ada Grey had two children, Muriel and Keith. In the late 1920s, the family moved to a farm The Meadows on the Weston estate at Marshall Mount, where Theo continued the development of his jersey cattle herd.
