Samuel Atchison Snr died in 1897 and was buried at the Presbyterian cemetery at Albion Park.
Samuel Snr and Clorinda's son, Samuel Charles Atchison volunteered to serve with the NSW Infantry Unit in the Boer War, where he was Killed in Action 20 February 1900, aged 24.
Shortly after his death, the Shellharbour community initiated steps for a memorial to be erected near the harbour. The 1900 monument, now located at Caroline Chisholm Park, is thought to be the oldest publicly erected war monument in Australia.DonorKretchmer, Graham
