TitleStone Tool - Hafted AxeObject TypeFirst NationsDescriptionThis hafted stone axe was exhibited in the Thomas Memorial Library at Shellharbour Village and is most likely a local Dharawal tool.
Hafted axes are rare and generally date to before European contact.
A piece of flexible wood was bent around the stone axe. The handle was originally attached with plant fibre and sinew and was later modified with string. Plant resin was used to secure the axe to the handle, making it possible for the user to take a hard swing when chopping.
Hafted axes were used to make many things; tools, weapons, wooden objects, containers, holes, and to strip bark from trees.
The Thomas Memorial Library Collection was originally housed in the School of Arts building at Shellharbour Village. The collection of books and curios was donated by Isabella Thomas on behalf of her husband William Makin Thomas, who bequeathed his collection of books, curios, photographs, and Aboriginal cultural heritage items, to the Shellharbour School of Arts DonorShellharbour City Council
