NameNAIDOC WeekDescriptionShellharbour City Council celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through its annual NAIDOC Community Day and the annual Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards, held in July.
The annual Community Day includes music, games, workshops, exhibitions, and more, and brings together the local community to celebrate Dharawal culture.
The Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards are a collaborative event held by Shellharbour, Kiama and Wollongong Councils, and recognise the achievements of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people and organisations.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Originally formed in 1956 as the National Aborigines Day Committee, it was not until 1974 that the committee was made entirely of Aboriginal members. The annual week-long national ceremony celebrates and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through activities held across the country.
