William married Sarah Keys and with their two children emigrated to Australia arriving in Sydney in 1851 aboard "Kate". Sarah & William had another child on the journey Agnes.
Sarah & William came Sydney with their children William James, Robert and Agnes (who was born on board.)
They arrived on the ship "Kate" on the 9th of October and immigration information shows he was an agricultural laborer and could read and write his parents were both deceased.
Immigration information shows they came to the Illawarra to possibly join Sarah's cousin John & Eliza Keys (Coughlan).
On board also was another cousin, Margaret Keys, and her immigration information states she was joining her brother and sister Eliza & John Keys residing in Wollongong area.
William & Sarah's first child born in Australia was Mary Jane b.1853 at Berkeley, indicating they came to the Illawarra. Sarah was born 1857 and Thomas b.1860 at Dapto.
In 1857, William had a 10 yr lease to Richard Dennis which was part of the Yallah Estate.
In September 1858 William donated 10/- towards the English Church at Shellharbour. He also donated 5/- towards the Incubus Libel Fund.
October 1859, he signed a petition to support S D Gordon nominating for the N.S.W. government.
From 1876-1885, William was recorded as lessee of land owned by Darley. On the Bassett-Darley Estate Map the Alcorn Buildings can be clearly seen showing Saltwater Creek.
William died in April 1884 and was buried in the General Cemetery Shellharbour. Source:
