According to his obituary, 'Kiama Independent 6 July 1877', he was born in County Galway, Ireland in 1807. He was married Maria Griffin in Ireland in 1838.
They came to Australia about 1839 and lived for a while in Sydney. They moved to Shellharbour and commenced farming, living at Terragong (on the Shellharbour/Jamberoo border).
Michael and Maria had seven children; Bridget, Andrew, Mary Ann, Martin, Margaret, Catherine and Michael.
Their daughter, Catherine Connolly married George Couch in 1877.
His obituary states that as a neighbour Michael was kind and obliging, as a friend unchanging and in business, honest and straightforward.
Michael was an alderman on Shellharbour Council and was involved in the establishment of the first free public library at Shellharbour.
