Thomas James married Rachel Arnold in 1890. Rachel was born in 1865 to George Cubitt Arnold and Mary Ann (nee: Szarka). George Arnold was a baker.
Thomas and Rachel built their home 'Rosemont' at Dunmore, and the family were prominent identities both in church and agricultural life.
Thomas James was Mayor of Shellharbour Municipal Council 1925 to 1928 and Alderman 1920-1931. He was a Methodist Circuit Steward at Shellharbour and Trustee of Kiama Church. He took an active part for many years in agricultural interests and the establishment of the Illawarra Dairy Cattle Association, and Secretary for many years.
Thomas and Rachel had several children, Jenefer Elizabeth b.1892, Miriam Sarah b.1893, Eva Rachel b.1895. Cubitt William b.1897, Beatrice Mary b.1899, John Thomas and Charles Francis b.1901, Helena Dorothy b.1903, Edith Ivy b.1904, Grace Margaret b.1905, and Jemima May b.1911.
