Shell Cove
DESCRIPTION
NameShell CoveTypeSuburbDescriptionIn 1843 Caroline Chisholm, The Emigrant’s Friend, brought 23 families of some 240 persons to Shellharbour where Captain Robert Towns, as part of Dr. Lang’s immigration scheme, offered Chisholm 4000 acres of land at Shellharbour to settle on the Peterborough Estate.
Each family was given a six to seven years clearing lease to clear the land and set up small self-sufficient farms, growing wheat, potatoes, and establishing dairy farms.
Matthew Dorrough, his wife Martha and their family came with Caroline Chisholm, and farmed the area known today as Shell Cove area.
The Dorrough’s were off- loaded on the beach in the afternoon, and spent their first night under the stars, with the children huddled up under the roots of a large fig tree at the edge of the beach.
Next morning they and their belongings were picked up by bullock dray and transported to the site of their proposed farm.
Matthew’s house was adjacent to the beach, and he was delegated the job of retaining and issuing the stores to the other settlers on the Estate. He was an experienced farmer and their crops were good, and with the help of his eldest children and Martha, the family prospered.
Shell Cove commenced residential development in 1997 and is home to many of Shellharbour's newest residents.
Officially assigned 12th January, 1996- NSW GNB
