The second subdivision of the Barrack Heights Estate was released and auctioned on Saturday 27 January 1962 of 64 building lots. Advertised by L. J. Hooker Ltd-Frank Bevan & Sons Pty Ltd, the home sites were offered at £50 deposit, balance over 4 years at 7% and water available on all sites. The suburb includes Shellharbour Private Hospital and one Public School.
It is a suburb adjoining the Blackbutt Forest Reserve in the south. The suburbs of Mt Warrigal and Warilla lie to the north, Barrack Point to the east and Oak Flats to the west.
The name Barrack is thought to have been derived from the Dharawal word 'Berrich' meaning swamp.
Barrack Heights was officially assigned on the 4th of July, 1986.
