Dr. Harman J Tarrant MLA was the first Worshipful Master of Kiama Samaritan Lodge No.294 (IC). The first lodge meeting was help in the Court House, Terralong Street, Kiama. Dr Tarrant presented the Lodge with the square and compass that are still used by Lodge Kiama today.
Lodge Minnamurra No 749 (SC) had been consecrated 10 August 1887. Following representations from the brethren, amalgamation of Kiama Samritan Lodge and Lodge Minnamurra was approved, and 14 March 1889 the first meeting of Lodge Kiama No 35 was help in the Church of England Sunday School hall. The first Worshipful Master was Worshipful Brother Duncan Salmond, proprietor of the Salmond Quarries, who constructed the first blue metal storage hoppers in Kiama Harbour.
The Temperance Society purchased land in Collins Street to provide a meeting place for their members. 16 March 1876 Dr. Harman Tarrant laid the foundation stone. Following the demise of the society, the building was purchased by Kiama Lodge in 1908, and the first meeting in the building was help 4 February 1909.
Shellharbour identity Theodore James Grey was initiated in Lodge Kiama 11 February 1903. He followed the progressive offices of the Lodge and served as Worshipful Master for the first time for the term 1911-1912. Theo served as District Grand Inspector Workings 1932-1934 and was promoted to the rank Past Junior Grand Warden in March 1957.
Theo's son, Kieth Grey was 35 years old when he joined the Lodge in 1942. Keith Grey was a long serving alderman and mayor of Shellharbour Council.
