NameFryerDescriptionWilliam Fryer was born in Maidstone, Kent and arrived in Dapto/Albion Park about 1836 when he was 20 years old. William married Sophia Dunster in 1842, and the couple lived in the area all their lives.
William was involved in the butter export industry in which butter was packed at Shellharbour in small cases or firkins, despatched to Sydney aboard the sailing vessel ‘The Peterborough’, and then on to England for sale. The enterprise ultimately failed without the ability to freeze the produce, and the lengthy journey involved.
William served as alderman on Shellharbour Municipal Council from 1864-1870 and as mayor for two years. His son, William Fryer Jnr served as mayor 33 years later, and another son Henry served as Town Clerk 1904-1906.
William Fryer Jnr and Eliza (nee Couch) married in 1868. They lived their whole lives in Albion Park and farmed at Mount Terry until their retirement when they moved to the township.
William served as alderman and mayor for Shellharbour Council and was heavily involved with the Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Society (AHI).
