Robert was admitted as an attorney in 1820 and married Jessie Thriepland Moncrieff, daughter of Lord Moncrieff of Fingask Castle, Perth, Scotland. Robert and Jessie had three children; Florence, Percy and Robert Jnr.
In the 1840's Robert and his two sons arrived in Australia and two years later he was working as a solicitor for the Supreme Court of NSW.
In 1841 he purchased 'Sarah's Valley' at Jamberoo. Over the years he purchased more land in the Illawarra.
Robert spent much time in Sydney, however his home was in Market Square in Wollongong.
Robert's son Percy married Eleanor Martha Haylock and they had seven children.
Percy and Eleanor's son Ernest William Owen married Constance Elaine McMillan in 1910. Constance was the daughter of Sir William McMillan.
Their son Evelyn was the famous inventor of the Owen Gun, that saved so many Australian lives during WWII and subsequent conflicts.
