Erwin was an alderman of Shellharbour Council, Central Ward, some 14 years 1977 to 1991.
He was a great supporter of community interests working towards the establishment of the Bass Point and Blackbutt Reserve. The entrance to Blackbutt Reserve from Shellharbour Road is named Erwin Zatschler Drive.
Erwin had a great interest in the preservation of heritage, and was foundation member and president of Shellharbour Heritage Society, later named Tongarra Heritage Society.
On discovery of the remains of the Tongarra Coal Loader from the Tongarra Mine, he managed to save the loader as an icon to the Coal Mining Industry in Shellharbour. The Tongarra Heritage Society, formed in 1995, took on the restoration of the loader.
