NameRoganDescriptionWilliam Rogan was born 10 May 1808 in County Derry Ireland.

He was tried in Armagh 13 March 1824 aged 17 and arrived in the colony 22 February 1825 on board the Asia; transported for seven years.

William was 5’3 with a freckled complexion. He had light brown hair and blue eyes and he worked as a pedlar. In 1829 William gained his Ticket of Leave 5 October 1829 his Certificate of Freedom 2 July 1831.

William married Caroline Amelia Swan (daughter of convict Edward Swan) in 1836, and they had fourteen children; James 1836 (married Elizabeth Sawtell), Mary Ann 1838, William 1840, Edward 1842 (married Margaret Boylan, daughter of convict parents William and Margaret Boylan), John Neil 1844 (married Maria Swan), Caroline Amelia 1846 (married Edward Sawtell), Catherine 1848, Ellen 1849, Sarah Jane 1851, Julia Ann 1853, Richard 1856, Thomas 1857, Robert 1860, and Charlotte 1863.

In 1838, William worked as a sawyer on the cedar estates of the Illawarra. By 1841, William and Caroline were living at Dapto and by 1847-1850 they lived at the Macquarie River (1841 Census).

In 1851 William purchased 40 acres of land at Dapto and continued to purchase additional acres over the years.

William petitioned the council several times in reference to the state of the road leading to his property and offered to perform a portion of the work at his own expense. In April 1879 the council passed payment of £4 to work on Rogan’s Road.

William donated two shillings to the Irish Famine Relief Fund in February 1880 and on 17 April that year he died and was buried at the West Dapto Roman Catholic Cemetery.
